About Samaná
The Samaná Peninsula is situated in the upper northeast corner of the Dominican Republic. Extending from west of Samaná Bay eastward to the western tip of the peninsula, Samaná province includes the cities of Sanchez, Las Terrenas, Las Galeras, El Limón and Santa Barbara de Samaná (simply called Samaná, the provincial capital). This area was first discovered by Christopher Columbus in 1493 when he landed at what is now Playa Rincon beach near Las Galeras in the east.
This relatively undeveloped region of rustic beauty and secluded pristine beaches is far from the touristy mega-resorts in distance, ambiance, and culture. Visitors coming here seek a more authentic Dominican Republic experience, one that includes hiking through a jungle to a waterfall, taking a boat ride to a prehistoric-looking National Park, and the region’s major attraction: whale watching.
Each winter, thousands of humpback whales leave the icy waters of the Arctic to bask in the warm, welcoming waters of Samaná Bay and the north coast of the Dominican Republic. An estimated 1,500 to 7,000 humpbacks make the annual migration to the Dominican Republic, where world-renowned local experts track and monitor this precious resource. The area receives thousands of tourists from late December through April, and many stay for the January to March whale-watching season to view this awesome spectacle. It is hardly surprising, therefore, that the government of the Dominican Republic is carefully developing this natural tourist attraction by constructing a modern cruise ship facility in Samaná Harbor, scheduled to open in 2024.
Samaná Bayport will have a capacity to serve three cruise ships at the same time, transporting up to 5,000 passengers simultaneously. Regarding the new cruise ship port, Jean Rodriguez, director of the Dominican Port Authority, highlighted it is not about building a port, it is about building opportunities, capacities, and growth. The project calls for a cruise terminal and urban renovation project that includes remodeling and restoring dozens of the colorful Victorian-style houses along the Malecon. Samaná peninsula is rich with investment opportunities in land, existing commercial development including hotels for sale, and private villas and residences. Prices remain more attractive here than in much of the rest of the country due to the region’s relatively remote and underdeveloped status compared to the country’s most congested tourist areas. Ex pats from the United States, Canada and Europe, are flocking to this area to take advantage of the ground floor opportunities here. Our company is knowledgeable in the entire area and available to assist you with your investment.
